Navajo Code Talkers to Be in NYC Veterans Parade

NEW YORK -- More than a dozen of the famed Navajo Code Talkers are coming to New York City to take part for the first time in the nation's largest Veterans Day Parade. The American Indians, all Marines, devised an unbreakable code from their ancient language that stymied the Japanese during World War II.

Only about 50 of the 400 Code Talkers are believed to be still alive. Many are in their 80s and feel their time to tell the world about their wartime contribution is running out.

The Code Talkers were sworn to secrecy and didn't talk about their code even after it was declassified in 1968. Their efforts saved countless lives and brought a speedier end to the war in the Pacific.

Please do not misunderstand: I appreciate and salute these valiant men. I realize they are aging. I want them to tell their stories.

I question the Press Agents' and PR flacks' phraseology.

Teachers taught about the Code Talkers when I lived in Oklahoma in 1955, in Texas in 1960, in Georgia in 1965, and in Florida in 1970. For being a secret, it seems that many people knew about them and many disparate teachers taught them.

The slimy advertising for the "Code Talkers" movie emphasized the unknown story. How can it be unknown if it is taught in school?

The story of the Code Talkers is rather like the story of the Civil War Battle of the Crater. For being a "never before told story," the Battle of the Crater makes the historical book circuit at least every ten years with a new, improved, politically correct, historically inaccurate interpretations but no new facts.

Do not misunderstand, I've respected and admired the Code Talkers since I first learned about them when was a wee pisher, and, I still do.

The Press Agents' and PR Flacks' dubious spin is regurgitable.
